Believe it or not, the agriculture industry is the leader in green house gas emissions, the world's largest consumer of fresh water, and largest land user of any other. Producing meat and animal products directly contributes to the world's most devastating practices towards environmental destruction.

It is important to acknowledge that fossil fuels are a transient energy source. Only a finite supply of oil and coal exist beneath our feet. Regardless of humanities choice to continue using petroleum based energy sources or not, it will eventually become obsolete. Those in control of the world's oil supply know this as much as everyone else. It will take time to shift our oil based economy into a green energy economy. The sooner the bolder.

Canada is lucky enough to have the largest supply of fresh water in the world. However, water is a collective issue, not a diplomatic one. Regardless of our situation, if one single person goes thirsty, the rest of us should act accordingly.

Go for a walk around your block and I guarantee you you will see garbage littered along your path. The person who left it there is surely not to blame. If you think there is a difference between garbage on the road and garbage in a landfill you are sadly mistaken. For you see, people don't appreciate litter because it reminds them of the truth. That we are all polluters. If you buy anything with petroleum based plastic packaging, you are part of the problem. Having said that, we are all part of the problem, and subsequently, optimistically, we are all part of the solution.

Living sustainably takes time and effort. Education is an important part in establishing the policies required to efficiently invoke change. Participating in community events, meeting with neighbours to discuss local issues, or becoming a member of a local committee are ways you can become actively involved in bringing about environmental consciousness.
